| | Local people need more affordable and social housing | |
|
There is a desperate shortage of affordable homes to buy and rent across Lambeth. We need the Government to help by allowing councils to build more public
housing, and we need to promote schemes that allow people to get on the housing ladder with part-rent / part-buy schemes. I've lobbied Gordon Brown in person about this because I believe we
can only have strong, stable communities if we make it possible for people with differing levels of income to live together in the same area.
As a councillor, I have:
-
Lobbied the Prime Minister directly to persuade him to allow councils to build more public housing - with strong tenant control
-
Set up a residents organisation that bid for - and eventually won - £500m to completely rebuild the Clapham Park Estate and transform the lives of the people
living there
-
Worked with local tenants and residents groups to win new windows, security doors, entry gates and play equipment
-
Backed tenants and leaseholders to take control of their own estates by setting up Resident Management Boards.
-
Worked for the biggest-ever investment in public housing in Lambeth with a bid for £240m Government funding to make every council home safe, warm and
dry.
-
Helped residents living in Housing Association flats win a better deal from their landlords
