Thank you for visiting my website. I was elected Leader of Lambeth Council in May 2006, and I've been a councillor for Brixton Hill Ward since 1998. Find out here about my local campaigns, what the council is up to - and how I'm working to make life better for people right across Lambeth.

Stockwell Park High School's award-winning new building

Schools Minister Jim Knight was at Stockwell Park High School this morning to see the first phase of the exciting new school building going up along Stockwell Road.  Cllr Paul McGlone and I were there to Jim alongside the school’s inspirational head teacher Judette Tapper.  Over recent years Judette has worked a near-miracle at the school, turning it from an underperforming school into one rated outstanding by Government school inspectors.

Paul and I joined Jim, Judette and a group of students to tour the new building.  The students were full of praise for the changes the new environment meant to them, telling us how much better it was to learn and feel motivated in classrooms built to such high standards of design.  The new school building has been funded by the Labour Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.  This is one of the great achievements of our Labour Government – with every school in the country rebuilt or refurbished and hundreds of brand new schools opened including three here in Lambeth.  Investing in our children’s future is one of the most important things we can do as a country, and it’s humbling to meet the students who are thrilled to be benefiting from it.

I took a bus from the school down to Brixton where I took part in a radio interview with the Latin American community radio and TV station Aculco.   Gloria Gomez runs the station and is a tireless advocate for London’s Latin American community.  I’ve met her on many occasions in the past and I’ve always been impressed by her determination and commitment to improve life for her community by fostering closer integration.  Gloria interviewed me, and tells me the programme will soon be available to download as a podcast (meaning you can play it on your iPod if you have one!).  I’m not sure how many people will take that opportunity up but it was a privilege to talk with Gloria about issues concerning Latin American citizens here in London.
