| | A local school place for every child | |
|
Steve has a track record for getting new schools built - including this one near Clapham Common in the Streatham constituency
When I took over as Leader of the Council, the Lib Dems and their Tory friends left 500 children every year without a school place on the day secondary
transfers are announced. Thanks to the new Labour administration, by 2010 there will be a place in a good local school for every child that wants
one.
Within months of leading Labour to victory, I and my senior colleagues on the Council sorted out a multi-million pound funding package to allow a new
school to go ahead in Brixton’s Shakespeare Road. The Lib Dems had failed to finalise any plans for the school, and seemed prepared to keep on dithering while children were left
to travel for miles across London in search of a school place. Weeks later, the Labour Council also gave planning approval for a new school in West
Norwood.
We didn't neglect our existing schools either. I worked with councillors and officers to secure approval for over £200m Government funding to
expand, refurbish or rebuild every secondary school in Lambeth.
Now I am heavily involved in negotiations to secure a site for yet another brand new secondary school in the Streatham constituency to serve the
children of Brixton Hill and Streatham Hill. Lib Dems and Tories rejected plans for this new school when they had the chance, but the Labour team that I lead are committed to
giving every child the chance to go to a good local secondary school.
