Steve works closely with Police to make local people safer
Crime and the fear of crime is the public’s top concern in every part of Lambeth. Since leading Labour back to power in our borough, I've worked hard to
make the council take the fight against crime more seriously than ever before.
Making people safer is a matter of social justice. Fear of crime keeps people locked indoors when the could be going out and doing things that would
enrich their lives. Fear of crime affects the poorest and most vulnerable the hardest, such as the elderly and disabled. Poor people suffer the most from crime - the young in
particular.
Just look at how the drugs trade on our streets fuels the gun and gang crime that, at its very worst, results in the killing of young people just as we saw in
Streatham and Clapham in early 2006.
That’s why I’ve set up a commission to bring all the public agencies together to take action against guns, gangs and knives on our streets. There are no quick
solutions - this is a long-term strategy that needs the community, the Council and the Government all working together.
I believe we have a duty to make our streets and our communities safe so that the law-abiding majority can go about their business and make the most of their
lives.
