Thank you for visiting my website. I was elected Leader of Lambeth Council in May 2006, and I've been a councillor for Brixton Hill Ward since 1998. Find out here about my local campaigns, what the council is up to - and how I'm working to make life better for people right across Lambeth.

Steve lobbies for Lambeth at Labour Conference

Lambeth Council Leader Steve Reed has met with Government ministers to call for further action on gun and gang crime.  Steve met with senior ministers during the Labour Party's annual conference in Bournemouth.  He later welcomed Prime Minister Gordon Brown's announcement that up to £690 million was to be made available to fund youth services.

Lambeth Council gained a reputation for going soft on crime under Lib Dem and Tory rule up to May 2006.  Since then, with Labour back in charge, the Council has invested in more Police Community Support Officers to patrol crime hot-spots, launched a crack-down on drug dealers and buyers with tough proposals to name persistent offenders and ban them from town centres, and announced the biggest investment in youth services in the Borough's history so that there are more positive things for young people to do.

Steve met with Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities, who accepted an invitation to visit Lambeth and see how the Council's improving.  He spoke to James Purnell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, to discuss extra investment in sports for young people.  Local Government Minister John Healey MP listened to Steve's case for the Council to keep £23 million which could be lost if a technical accounting issue dating back 16 years is not resolved.  Home Secretary Jacqui Smith MP accepted an invitation to meet Steve to discuss the Council's ground-breaking approach to tackling gun and gang crime.  Finally, Steve met with Angela Smith MP from the Government's housing team.  Steve asked her for help with an £11 million funding gap that has arisen because the Lib Dems failed to follow official guidelines while they presided over meltdown in the housing service.

Steve commented: "I'm glad so many ministers wanted to sit down and hear how Labour's working hard to make Lambeth better.  I pointed out that we want to work in partnership with the Government, and they seemed eager to listen.  Now I hope we'll see the benefits come through in new resources for the people of Lambeth."
